Dear Cop - Who Yields

My question concerns the KLO and Benvoulin Road intersection and who yields to who......

If you are on Benvoulin and heading north, then get into the left turn lane to head west on KLO, you wait until the oncoming through lane on Benvoulin clears before proceeding through the intersection. Turning left, to head west up KLO, you are now confronted by vehicles entering KLO from the southbound, right turn lane of Benvoulin Road. There is a yield sign on that right turn, southbound lane, so if I haven't confused you totally, my question is who yields to who? If I am northbound turning left and have a collision with a southbound vehicle turning right, who would be at fault?

I work in that immediate area and travel through that intersection several times a day. There is a lot of traffic flow, a lot of near misses and a lot of confused drivers, especially at 5:00PM, very, very, busy and dark.

I have a new driver in my family and when he asked me the rules for that intersection, I did not have an answer and realized that even I am not sure....

The intersection that you have written about has the appropriate signage. Vehicles proceeding southbound on Benvoulin Road and making a right turn to proceed west on KLO Road face a yield sign. This means that the vehicles facing the yield sign would have to yield to a vehicle making a left turn from northbound Benvoulin Road onto KLO Road westbound.

Section 173 (2) of the Motor Vehicle Act indicates that except as provided in section 175, if 2 vehicles approach or enter an intersection from different highways at approximately the same time and there is a yield sign, the driver of a vehicle facing the sign must yield the right of way to all other traffic.
