Not so negative!

I like to think of myself as a positive person, someone who still believes that the proverbial glass is always half full.  It makes my communication with others far more enjoyable and I also believe by staying positive and sharing my positive energy with others that my mental and physical health both benefit. I understand how ironic this seems as I am writing in my column that is all about ranting and complaining about things in life that bother me and yet I am telling you that I am a positive person, but it’s true.  This is my outlet, my therapy if you will and at least I go into detail to help you better understand what it is I have an issue with and don’t just shoot things down.  I support my argument with proof and hope in the end it will shed some light on the issue and potentially help to fix it altogether.

What I have a problem with is negativity for no reason, for the sake of bringing people down so that you can somehow feel better about yourself.  YouTube is a perfect example of where this happens all the time.  People have nothing better to do all day than sit at home hiding behind their computer screens watching other peoples work and then sharing their negative comments such as, “what a waste of my life this video was” or “this video was dumber than the guy in it”.

It’s sad that in a world with something as positive as the internet, with almost endless potential, we can still find a way to bring so much negative energy towards it.  What exactly are these comments meant to do?  My guess is make a very sad and lonely person feel better about them self for a very short period of time.  They are also meant to make the same people feel less crappy for not getting off their asses to go out in the real world, take risks, have fun, try new things and live their life.  Sure you are big and tough behind your computer screen but you have no idea what you are missing.

If you have been personally offended or feel personally attacked of course you should speak-up and defend yourself, but if it really makes no difference to you why would you go out of your way to hurt someone else?  I remember being raised with the saying, “if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all!”  Could you imagine if we were all working together to show support for each other and the hard work that we do?  Just like negative energy, positive energy is also contagious and something I wish more people would make a conscious effort to share.

If you really need to be “that guy/girl” who shares nothing but negative energy all the time, can you do me one BIG FAVOUR?  Move out of your parents basement already because they are probably sick and tired of your crap as well and just don’t know how to tell you because they don’t want you to once again make them feel like crap for no reason.   Just do this one nice thing and who knows, it could be the first of many!
