Warriors add, subtract ahead of opener

West Kelowna Warriors head coach/GM, Rylan Ferster has never been one to pass up an opportunity to improve his hockey team.

Following a pair of losses to open up the regular season at the Showcase event in Chilliwack, Ferster made two moves in advance of Friday's home opener against the Merritt Centennials.

The club released goaltender Steven Myland who allowed four goals on nine shots in Saturday's 6-5 loss to Nanaimo.

"Obviously it was a decision we had to make because we still had three goalies in camp," says Ferster of the decision.

"It's never fun doing that to a kid who was committed to your program last year and played. It was tough to do. I've always said hockey is a great game but a crappy business and that was a day when it was a crappy business."

Ferster says Myland is a great kid who had a rough night (Saturday).

The move leaves the Warriors with Andy Desautels and Tanner Burgardt between the pipes.

On the plus side, the Warriors added overage forward Tyson Dallman, who was released earlier in the week by the Western Hockey League's Tri-City Americans.

Dallman arrived in West Kelowna Wednesday afternoon and should be in the line-up Friday.

Both Ferster and Dallman hail from Prince Albert and Ferster says he knows Tyson and knows his family.

"He was a guy who I kind of had my eye on since I took over and, the tough thing about the Western League is, you can only keep three 20's," says Ferster.

"It's a tough thing for some of those guys."

As for what he brings on the ice, Ferster says he'll bring a bit of an edge.

"He plays a complete game. I really liked him as a midget hockey player and obviously he played in a good program and a higher league the last couple of years," says Ferster.

"I think he will bring some offensive ability. I think he will be a guy that's tough to play against and he's a veteran - a 20-year-old veteran."

Dallman will join defencemen Taylor Graham and Jaden Schmessier (injured) as the only 20-year-olds on the Warriors roster.
