Backs trounce Warriors

The Salmon Arm Silverbacks drew first blood in a key home-and-home with the West Kelowna Warriors.

The Silverbacks jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead, and coasted to a 5-1 victory Friday at the Shaw Centre in Salmon Arm.

They upped the lead to four after 40 minutes before Austin Chorney got the Warriors on the board midway through the third.

It was too little, too late.

The Warriors carried much of the play during the opening 20 minutes, but were unable to solve Ethan Langenegger, who made a number of key saves to keep the Warriors off the board.

The Silverbacks capitalized on their chances. Aiden Jenner and Matthew Verboon made it 2-0 by the midway point of the opening period, beating starter Brock Baier on two of the first five shots he faced.

Nick Unruh doubled the lead with a power play goal late in the first and an even strength marker early in the second.

Chorney scored as the Warriors exerted tremendous pressure during the early stages of the third, but were unable to get any more past Ethan Langenegger, who turned away 41 shots, including 17 during a furious final period.

Friday's win pushed the Silverbacks to within two points of the fourth place Warriors in the tight Interior Division.

Vernon crept to within a single point of West Kelowna with their 6-3 win in Trail.

The Warriors look to earn a split of the home-and-home Saturday when they entertain the Silverbacks in Brandon West's home head coaching debut.
