Vipers lose in last minute

The Vernon Vipers continue to sink further into the basement of the Interior Division after another loss to a division rival.

The Vipers travelled down south to Penticton to take on the Vees Wednesday night in a battle of worst vs first.

Penticton opened the scoring in the second period and kept the 1-0 lead until the 8:49 mark of the third when Josh Latta scored his 12th goal of the year.

The game looked as if it would be heading to overtime, but then Penticton scored with less than a minute in the game to take a 2-1 lead. That is the way the game ended.

Viper's goalie, Bradley Cooper, put in a solid effort in the loss, making 35 saves on 37 shots.

The loss to Penticton is the third loss in a row for Vernon who sit three points back of Trail in the last place in the Interior Division.

Vernon only has one win in the month of December.

Vernon has two road games before the Christmas break, both in Wenatchee, Friday and Saturday.

Wenatchee  is one point back of Penticton for first place in the Interior Division.

In Team news, Vipers' forward Alex Swetlikoff has opted to move on to the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League.

The 17-year-old posted 11 goals and 24 assists in 78 games with the Vipers.  He also won two medals with Team Canada West, Gold last season and Bronze last week.
