Vees win 10th in 11 games

In their first home game in 20 days, the Penticton Vees blanked the Trail Smoke Eaters 3-0 on Friday night to earn their 10th win in their past 11 games.

The win was the second in three nights for Penticton against Trail, after earning a 5-1 win in the Smokies' building on Wednesday.

Friday's win wasn't much fancy for the Vees, but one that they never lost a handle of thanks to a stingy defence and an opportune offence.

"It was one of those games where I thought we had control right from the opening puck drop," Vees assistant coach Matt Fraser said postgame on EZ Rock 800

The Vees scored a pair of powerplay goals chances early in the game, which would end up being plenty of insurance.

Wyatt Sloboshan ripped a one-timer to open the scoring at 13:07, on a five-on-three powerplay for Penticton. Just under three minutes later, on their fourth powerplay of the night already, Cassidy Bowes scored upstairs to pad the lead.

The next goal came at 1:19 of the third period, when Jonny Tychonick joined the rush and buried one past Smokies goalie Adam Marcoux to stretch the lead.

Adam Scheel, who returned after getting run over last weekend against Salmon Arm, made 23 stops to earn the shutout for the Vees.

Penticton led 34-23 in shots, and doubled Trail in shots in the first (14-7) and the third (12-6). The Vees were also 2-7 on the man advantage and 4-4 on the penalty kill.

The Vees now are 13-1-0-1 so far in 2018, and sit alone atop the BCHL with 75 points in 50 games.

Despite their run in the past six weeks, Penticton hasn't broken away from teams on their tail.

The Vernon Vipers, who have won five of their last six games, sit only two points behind the Vees, albeit with two more games played to date.

The Vees and Vipers haven't played in two months, but will meet on Saturday for the final time this season in a marquee matchup at the SOEC.

In their last meeting on Dec. 9 in Vernon, the Vipers promptly ended a 12-game winning streak for the Vees with a 4-0 shutout win.

Puck drop at the SOEC on Saturday is at 6 p.m., and fans are encouraged to also bring a non-perishable food item for the Salvation Army as part of their annual Valley First 'Feed the Valley' night.
