High-flying Vees face Trail

Colton Davies

The Penticton Vees will take a four-game winning streak into Cominco Arena on Wednesday night, when they visit the league-best Trail Smoke Eaters.

Penticton and Trail are both riding high right now; the Vees' four-straight wins have them at 14-5-1-2 on the season, while the Smokies have won three in a row and nine of their past 10, and boast a record of 19-5-1-0.

The last time the two teams met, on Oct. 28 in Trail, the Smokies came away with a 4-1 win and led 38-20 in shots.

"One of our weakest performances of the year," Vees head coach and general manager Fred Harbinson said of the team's last meeting. "This is probably the most excited we've been going to Trail... It's going to be a good test for us."

The Vees enter Wednesday's game after a week for ages in three contests last week.

They started by downing the Surrey Eagles 7-1 on Nov. 15, a game where they scored four times on their first six shots.

Two nights later, both Nicky Leivermann and Dakota Boutin recorded hat tricks in an 11-3 road drubbing of the West Kelowna Warriors.

Finally, on Saturday, the Vees scored 10 more times in a 10-1 rout of the visiting Cowichan Valley Capitals, a game where all but three Penticton players found the scoresheet.

The results of the three football-like scores were 28 goals in a three-game span for Penticton.

No B.C. Hockey League team has reached that total since the Nanaimo Clippers scored 28 times in three games in January of 2008, according to Vees director of broadcasting Craig Beauchemin.

To top it off, Leivermann was named the BCHL's player of the week, for the week from Nov. 13 to 19,after posting four goals and an assist in the three games.

"You can see the last couple weeks, he's really moving in the right direction. And he played a real outstanding, well-rounded game. He scored a bunch of points but played well without the puck as well," Harbinson said of his rookie defenceman Leivermann.

His teammates, Jonny Tychonick who had 10 assists in three games, and Owen Sillinger who had three goals and six assists, were also honourable mentions for player of the week voting.

Following Wednesday night's tilt in Trail, Penticton returns home to host the Salmon Arm Silverbacks on Friday night and the Chilliwack Chiefs on Saturday. The Vees have seen each of those clubs once so far this year.

They scored five times in the first period on Sept. 15 en route to a 6-2 win in Salmon Arm, and scored four times in five minutes as part of a 6-3 win in Chilliwack on Sept. 23.
