Warriors take down 'Backs'

Jake Harrison played the role as hero Saturday as the West Kelowna Warriors moved into second s;pot in the BCHL's Interior Division.

Harrison scored 1:46 into three-on-three double overtime leading the Warriors to a 2-1 win over the Salmon Arm Silverbacks at the Shaw Centre in Salmon Arm.

The tight game was a stark contrast from the night before when the teams were involved in separate games n which 28 goals were scored. West Kelowna beat Trail 9-4 while Salmon Arm gave up nine unanswered goals in a 10-5 loss to Vernon.

Jonathan Desbiens opened the scoring in the first period with his team-leading 29th of the season and fourth in two nights.

With the Silverbacks shorthanded, Kristien Blumenschein found Desbiens who beat Brandon Kegler five-hole.

The score held up until midway through the third when Ross Heidt beat Matthew Greenfield on a two-on-one break.

The Silverbacks had a chance to win it with a power-play during the four-on-four overtime period but the Warriors penalty kill held them back until Harrison beat Kegler between the legs on a two-on-one break in double overtime.

The win moves the Warriors a point up on third place Salmon Arm. The Silverbacks do hold three games in hand.

Next up for the Warriors, an exhibition game Monday against the touring Salzburg Red Bulls, an under-20 squad from Austria.

Face off is 7 p.m. at Royal LePage Place.
