Sun blow late lead

Third and 18 with less than two minutes left - that's all that stood between the Okanagan Sun and a victory over the number one team in the BC Football Conference.

But, it was the Langley Rams who came up with the big play when they needed it most, as quarterback Tristan Secord-Yanciw hit Reid Jensen over the middle for a 19 yard gain.

That completion, with three Sun defenders in the area, allowed the Rams to maintain possession, and march down the field for the game-winning touchdown in a 14-10 victory over the Sun.

"They had a play and threw it beyond the sticks...good for them. We weren't aggressive enough on the football," said Sun head coach Jamie Boreham.

"If we want to play soft and left other people attack us, we're going to lose."

That final drive provided the only sustained march for the Rams, who started on their own 16, and moved the ball 94 yards on 13 plays, aided by a personal foul that placed the ball on the Sun one-yard line. The Rams punched it in on the next play with just 12 seconds left.

The Sun started fast, as Malcolm Miller found a seam over the right side and scampered 48 yards on just their second offensive play of the afternoon.

It turned out to be their only big play on offence the rest of the way.

Neither team were very effective in moving the ball consistently for much of the contest. The only other Sun points came on a missed 31-yard field goal and a conceded safety early in the fourth that gave the Sun a 10-8 lead.

Before the last drive, the Rams managed just a pair of field goals and two singles off the foot of Jaden Sheilan.

Alex Douglas went all distance behind centre for the Sun. Unofficially, he finished the day completing 11 of 19 passes for 117 yards. He also ran the ball five times for 24 yards.

Miller carried eight times for 72 yards and the touchdown. He also caught four passes for 52 yards before leaving in the third quarter with an injury.

Secord-Yanciw went most of the way at quarterback for the Rams, replacing starter Duncan Little, who was absent after the birth of his first child.

Secord-Yanciw completed just nine of 23 passes, but racked up 209 yards, connecting on some big plays to wide open receivers in the Sun secondary.

He was also intercepted three times.

The Sun, 2-3 on the season, have now lost three in a row.

They will try and right the ship next Saturday afternoon when they travel to Kamloops to face the 0-5 Broncos
