Sun gun for first

When the BC Football Conference set the 2018 schedule back in the winter, they probably expected Saturday's season-ending tilt between the Okanagan Sun and Westshore Rebels would decide first place.

What they didn't anticipate was the game would have meaning to just one of the teams involved.

The Sun will clinch the BCFC regular season title, and home field advantage through the playoffs, with a win or a tie Saturday.

The Rebels have been eliminated from the playoffs. Their season went off the rails early when head coach Charly Cardilicchia was first suspended, then stepped down, after he criticized the league for the way it handled a suspended game in Kamloops in August.

Days later, five players were ejected during a game against the VI Raiders. That resulted in a pair of one-game suspension and a season-long suspension for linebacker Cordell Holder.

The Sun had problems of their own early in the year, dealing with injuries and a lack of consistency to a 2-2-1 start. Four straight wins later and they sit atop the BCFC, a point up on the Langley Rams and Valley Huskers heading into Saturday's showdown with the Rebels.

The Sun head into Saturday's game still without it's starting quarterback. Head coach Ben Macauley says he doesn't expect Jakob Loucks to dress Saturday as he deals with the affects of an upper body injury.

That means backup Matthew Mahler will again run the offence.

Mahler, and the rest of the offence struggled in last Sunday's 18-10 win over the winless Kamloops Broncos.

However, Macauley says he expects a much different team to take the field Saturday.

"We have had a much better week of practice, and typically, our week of practice is an indicator of how we play. I think for the most part, the energy's good, and there is a lot at stake this week," said Macauley.

"There's a lot of personal relationships and tensions between these two teams going back the last few years. It's always been a good battle no matter what place we're in."

Kickoff Saturday is 7 p.m. at the Apple Bowl.
