Sun steamroll to final

It was a dominating performance, the likes Okanagan Sun head coach Shane Beatty hasn't seen in his three years patrolling the sidelines.

Beatty's charges dissected the Kamloops Broncos in every way imaginable in a 75-7 whitewashing in the BC Football Conference semi-final at the Apple Bowl Sunday.

"Best effort in three years. I'm so proud of these kids and this staff," said a beaming Batty after the game.

The defence, which was torched for nearly 475 yards through the air the last time these two teams met, was suffocating all game long.

The Broncos managed just 121 yards of total offence. Quarterback Steve Schuweiler passed for just 83 yards. He was intercepted twice, sacked five times and fumbled once.

"They were embarrassed in Kamloops. So we went back to our roots, changed everything we could and made it easy for the kids," said Beatty.

"We let them play fast. Jonas Gering, Van Nistelrroy, Cord Delinte, holy cow.

Gering and Luca Machado each had two of the seven sacks the defence managed while Delinte picked Schuweiler off twice, the second went back for an 86 yard touchdown.

Offensively, the Broncos didn't have answer for the Sun passing game.

Cam Bedore passed for 274 yards and three touchdowns in the first half alone.

Leading 3-0. Bedore hooked up with his favourite target, Kyle Kawamoto on a 79 yard touchdown. Bedore hit Kawamoto in stride with a ball that easily travelled 50 yards in the air.

"That was a pretty long throw. It was a great throw by Cam and he made it pretty easy on me," said Kawamoto who had to split past two defenders to get to the pass.

"I had to get on my horse to get that one. He really laid it out there."

The two hooked up later in the first half for an 87 yard touchdown bomb. A blown coverage left Kawamoto all by himself in the right flat. It was an easy race into the end zone.

Bedore also hit Kyle Patchell on a 10 yard strike and ran one in from 26 yards himself as the Sun build up a 40-0 halftime lead.

The Sun didn't let up in the second half. Bedore and Kawamoto hooked up from nine yards out to make it 47-0 before Delinte's pick six increased the margin to 54.

Josiah Joseph came into the game in the fourth quarter. He hit Patchell for touchdown strikes of eight and 55 yards and ran one in himself from 12 yards out.

The lone score for the Broncos came in the dying minutes when Jordan Angove returned a kickoff 103 yards for a touchdown. It was the second longest playoff kick return in BCFC history.

In all, he Sun amassed more than 600 yards in total offence. Bedore finished 16-24 for 328 yards and fur touchdowns while Joseph was 7-7 for 124 yards and two touchdowns.

The Sun ran the ball sparingly, but when they did, they were effective to the tune of 156 yards.

"We put in a lot of work this week. The last time we played them we felt we didn't have a very good game," said Kawamoto.

"We wanted to come here and show what we could do."

The Sun now move on to host the Vancouver Island Raiders in the league championship game.

The Raiders advanced beating reigning champion Langley Rams 28-27 Saturday.

Sunday's BCFC title game kicks off at 1 p.m. next Sunday at the Apple Bowl.
