Video released of hit and run incident

Burnaby RCMP and the family of a cyclist killed in hit and run incident are making a joint plea for the suspect driver, and any possible witnesses to come forward.

It is believed another driver came across the scene just as it occurred, or seconds after, and then reversed and left. Police urgently wish to speak to that person about what he or she may have seen.

The incident occurred at the intersection of 13th Avenue and Wright Street in Burnaby, at approximately 8:30 pm June 30.

The deceased cyclist has been identified as 72-year-old Edward Simpkins, a long time resident of Burnaby.

“We thought Ed was indestructible. His family and friends are in shock and grieving and not knowing what happened makes it so much worse,” says Janet Atkinson-Grosjean, his sister. “We can understand the driver’s initial panic but it’s time for her to come forward, now, so we can say ‘goodbye’ to Ed with easier minds.”

Surveillance video obtained shows the suspect vehicle approaching the accident location. Witnesses stated the driver was a woman. The vehicle is described as a dark blue or black late model 2 door coupe, condition unknown. It appears to be very similar to an Acura RSX or similar model.

“We recognize that the situation could be overwhelming for anyone involved in such an incident, and we encourage the driver to come forward,” says Staff Sergeant Major John Buis.

“Our investigation also reveals that there was at least one other vehicle that approached the collision scene only a few seconds after the accident had occurred but the driver left before the police arrived.  We believe this driver is a critically important witness.”

Police are appealing to the driver of either the suspect car, witness vehicle, or any person who may have come upon the accident scene to contact Burnaby Detachment at 604-294-7922 or CRIMESTOPPERS at 1-800-222-8477.
