Multiple deaths in Surrey car crash

Five people have died in a car crash that has closed Pacific Highway in both directions, Surrey RCMP said.

Police say three adults and two children are dead after two cars collided near the intersection of 176 St. and 32 Ave. at about 11 a.m. on Sunday.

The force of the crash caused both cars to overturn, and a pair of sunglasses was found embedded in a light post after the crash, Surrey RCMP said.

A man in his mid-40s has been airlifted to Royal Columbian Hospital, where he remains in serious condition.

Police say he is likely the driver of a white minivan, which is believed to have run a red light.

An eight-block stretch of the Pacific Highway near the U.S. border, about 3.5 kilometres north of the Washington border, has been closed in both direction, according to the Ministry of Transportation.

Officials have not released any further details about the victims.

Police earlier said that at least six people had died, but later revised the death toll to five.
