Less sticker shock for eCar buyers

The provincial government has extended its clean energy vehicle incentive program for another year.

Environment Minister Terry Lake made the announcement, Tuesday, at the Vancouver International Auto Show.

The program provides BC residents with up to $5000 off the pre-tax sticker price for the qualifying new eCars - a vehicle that uses: battery electric, fuel-cell electric, plug-in hybrid electric or compressed natural gas.

According to local Kelowna-Lake Country MLA the program was to end on March 31, but will continue as $2.5 million will now carry over from the original $14.3 million Clean Energy Vehicle Program.

"I believe around 410 (exact number 431) vehicles have been signed up for this over the last little while and we want to make sure we continue to use those dollars that are left to encourage other people to sign up for the program," says Letnick.

The Liberals will also continue to provide a rebate of up to $500 per unit for residential electric charging stations as part of the LiveSmart BC Residential Charging Point Rebate Program. For which the province has handed out 111 rebates so far.
