Threat reported at Nanaimo school

Police officers or private security guards are keeping a watchful eye over the classrooms and fields of three Nanaimo, schools after police say a school board employee made a threat.

Cst. Gary O'Brien isn't releasing many details of the threat, but says the extra security was added following a risk assessment protocol.

It means doors of the two secondary schools, one elementary school and the School District 68 administrative offices are locked as officials address the threat risk on a daily basis.

O'Brien says nothing has happened -- or is expected to happen -- and the measures are purely precautionary.

District spokeswoman Donna Reimer agrees, saying she would continue to send her own children to school and the security guards have been posted in order to assure parents that the facilities remain safe.

Affected schools include Dover Bay Secondary in Nanaimo's north end, Nanaimo District Secondary, west of the downtown core, and Cilaire Elementary, overlooking Departure Bay.
