Stabbing spree in Vancouver

Two victims of a horrific stabbing spree at an apartment building in Vancouver’s West End have been released from hospital, while another four remain in treatment.

One victim is in critical condition.

Vancouver Police Sgt. Randy Fincham said teams will continue their investigation at the scene, an apartment building at Barclay and Bute streets, throughout the day Friday.

Police don’t believe the suspect lived at the building and they say the attack appears to be completely random – because there are no links between the 33-year-old man and any of the people who were attacked.

“It appears that a lot of these victims were unrelated to each other and they had no dealings with each other tonight. It was something that possibly happened in the hallway,” Fincham said.

A police officer was also hurt while taking the suspect into custody inside one of the suites. The officer was treated at the scene and released.

Witnesses told CTV News a chaotic scene unfolded as officers scoured the area for a suspect still on the loose.
“There were about six or eight cop cars on the scene. People were hanging over their balconies directing police, so obviously they could see the [suspect],” onlooker Angela Robinson said.

“I heard the police shout, ‘Vancouver Police, stay where you are,’ a few times and then I thought it would be best to get out of there.”

Police are still examining how the man got into the building or what he was doing inside at the time the attacks occurred.
