Smoking and sports a bad combo

Olympic gold medallist Ashleigh McIvor wants people to butt out while they're skiing and snowboarding on Vancouver-area mountains.

The ski-cross champ is featured in Vancouver Coastal Health Authority ads targeting youth online and on chairlifts at Seymour Mountain.

The campaign is running during National Non-Smoking Week.

McIvor says smoking and sports don't mix and that she's glad she never took up the habit that would have impaired her athletic performance.

The health authority says about 21 per cent of 20- to 24-year-old Canadians smoke, but that rates are the lowest in B.C.

The province offers free nicotine gum or patches to people who want to quit smoking.
