Speakers want coast guard stn. open

Leaders of British Columbia's political parties are calling on the federal government to reverse course on its decision to close the Kitsilano Coast Guard base in Vancouver.

About 100 people showed up Saturday at the Jericho Sailing Centre, where NDP Leader Adrian Dix urged them to keep the campaign going.

Conservative party Leader John Cummins also spoke against Ottawa's slated closure of the base this spring.

Event organizer Dave Clark with the Union of Canadian Transportation Employees says there's still time for the federal government to rethink its decision.

Earlier this month, the federal government announced a three-person inshore rescue team will set up in Stanley Park to offer around-the-clock service during the peak boating season.

Premier Christy Clark said Friday that Vancouver will still be left with a dangerous drop in service for eight months of the year. (News 1130, CKNW)
