Mounties believe Skye and Courtney Buck died Sunday night after their car lost control on an ice and snow-packed patch of Highway 5 then crashed down a 30-meter embankment into the North Thompson River.

The vehicle was fully submerged before authorities arrived on scene and had not been recovered by Monday afternoon, but police consider the couple missing and deceased.

Both victims were 30 years old; Skye would have turned 31 on Tuesday.

Terry Sullivan of the Kamloops-Thompson school district said the news was heartbreaking for local residents.
“I can’t find words to express how sad we feel today, how much we want to reach out to the Buck family and do everything we can to assist them,” Sullivan said.

Sources told CTV News the couple was also expecting a baby within a matter of weeks.

Grievance counselors and victim services have been sent to the high school and elementary schools were the Bucks taught in Clearwater, a town of roughly 5,000 located 120 kilometres north of Kamloops.

RCMP Cpl. Bart Doerr issued a statement Monday describing them as “prominent and well-known members” of the community.

“This is a truly tragic and unfortunate incident that is being felt throughout the entire community," Doerr said.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but police believe road conditions played a factor.
