Pedestrian killed in Kamloops

Victoria and 6th in Kamloops

A 66-year-old Kamloops woman died after being hit by a vehicle while walking north to south in the cross walk on Victoria St. at 6th Avenue around 5:25 p.m. Wednesday evening. 

Police, paramedics and Kamloops Fire Rescue attended the scene and provided emergency medical care to the woman who was pronounced dead upon arrival at Royal Inland Hospital.

A 62-year-old Kamloops man who was prohibited from driving under the Motor Vehicle Act, was operating a 2002 Ford F-150 pickup north on 6th Ave. prior to the crash and stopped at the intersection to turn left from 6th Avenue onto Victoria St. 

The driver made the left turn and struck the pedestrian as she proceeded through the cross crosswalk.  The intersection is governed by vehicle traffic lights and pedestrian crossing lights.

The vehicle was impounded by police and will be given a complete mechanical inspection as part of the ongoing police investigation. An RCMP collision analysts was called to the crash site and obtained evidence and scene measurements that will enable investigators to reconstruct the crash. The driver remained at the scene and later spoke with investigators from the RCMP detachment prior to being released.

Drugs and alcohol have been eliminated as factors in the crash.  A complete report of the incident will be compiled and forwarded to Crown for review and assessment of charges.  Police will recommend that the driver be summoned to court in relation to Provincial Motor Vehicle Act charges of Driving While Prohibited and Failing to Yield for a Pedestrian.  No decision on charge recommendation under the Criminal Code will be made until the investigation is complete.

The victim’s name will be released at the discretion of the BC Coroner’s office.
