That's a wrap. The wildfire season has been contained, well for the most part . . . there was a small brush fire in Kamloops over the weekend, but it was quickly brought under control by city crews. On Monday most of the open burning bans were lifted and the majority of the fire fighters have been sent home.

The most destructive fire season, for homes lost, was 2003. In that year 2,473 fires burned 265,053 hectares at a cost of $371 million. In 2003, 959 or 38.8% of fires were human caused, 1514 or 61.2% were lightning caused
The most destructive fires were the McLure Fire and the Okanagan Mountain Park Fire.
The McLure fire began July 31. It forced the evacuation of 3,000 people, including the entire community of Barriere. Seventy-two homes and nine businesses were destroyed including the Tolko Industries Sawmill in Louis Creek which left 180 people out of work.
The Okanagan Mountain Park Fire began as a result of a lightning strike August 16 in the western portion of the park near Okanagan Lake.
At its height, about 30,000 Kelowna residents were evacuated.
A total of 244 homes were destroyed.
