Firefighters and helicopters have now gained control of a small blaze that broke out on a mountain in North Vancouver.

Donna MacPherson, a fire information officer with the Ministry of Forests, said by Friday evening crews had contained the small wildfire, about 10 metres by 15 metres in size, in the Mount Fromme area, just east of Grouse Mountain.

"What that means is that the crews are reasonably confident that the fire isn't going to move beyond the perimeters of the fire," she said.

MacPherson said firefighters spent the night mopping up the blaze, working from its edges inward, breaking up, wetting and burying anything that was hot and warm.

She said the fire was human caused but was not a threat to any homes.

Reported around 4:30 p.m., the wildfire caused a billowing column of smoke that could be seen in some areas of the Lower Mainland.

By Friday night, two attack crews, including six firefighters, and three helicopters were fighting the blaze, said MacPherson.

MacPherson said she didn't know how long it would take to put the fire out.
