An RCMP officer in Cranbrook has resigned from the force after he was caught stealing property seized from a crime scene.

During a press conference in the Kootenay community, RCMP Chief Superintendent Mike Sekela, says a criminal code investigation was launched against Cst. Bryden Hennessey over his handling of property seized while on duty.

Sekela says the Constable was removed from duty pending a Code of Conduct Investigation.

He stated that, within three weeks, the investigation substantiated the allegation that Hennessey had stolen a computer.

"His gun and badge were seized and Mr. Hennessey was suspended from duty and served with a Notice of Stoppage of Pay," says Sekela in his statement.

"In early December Mr. Hennessey submitted his resignation. His resignation was accepted by the Commanding Officer and is irrevocable. He will never work for the RCMP again."

Hennessey also faces criminal charges of Theft Under $5,000.

"I have stated before that allegations of misconduct by our members are extremely troubling. Troubling to the public and troubling to me," added Sekela.

"But also troubling to the over 9,000 RCMP employees in BC who have the highest moral and ethical standards. While disappointing, this case was handled decisively and promptly and is consistent with the manner in which incidents of this nature, should they occur, will be handled in the future."
