A fire in a home early Tuesday morning has claimed the lives of twin toddlers in the northern BC community of Mackenize.
Five family members were inside the home when the blaze broke out about 7:30 a.m. Two children were trapped on the second floor of the building.
Police say parents, members of the RCMP, fire crews and a civilian all attempted to gain access to the house to rescue the children, but the fire was 'too aggressive.'
Despite efforts at the scene the two 18 month old children, a boy and girl, died in the fire.
The parents and a three-year-old child survived the fire.
"This is a tragic loss not only for the family but also the entire community," says Mackenize Detachment Commander, Syd Lecky.
Victim Services and a Critical Incident Team are assisting the family, first responders and the community with this devastating situation.
Names have not yet been released.
