A man whose leg was bitten by a police dog during an arrest has filed a lawsuit against the Vancouver Police Department.
Thirty-three-year-old Christopher Evans says the arresting officer used excessive force after he was suspected of breaking a window on a city bus last June.
Evans is being represented by the Pivot Legal Society, which has circulated photos of a large gash on Evans' right leg, which Pivot says needed almost 100 stitches.
Pivot lawyer Doug King says the suit challenges the "bite and hold" method used to train police dogs.
He advocates a "bark and hold" method be used in keeping with training used for police dogs in some U.S. cities.
King says the current deployment of police dogs is akin to how often Tasers were used before the harm they could cause came to light.
