Pet adoption slows down at BC SPCA

Pet adoption numbers at the BC SPCA have dropped for the first time since the pandemic.

According to the BC SPCA, applications for pet adoption were at an all-time high during the height of COVID-19 as people searched for companionship from a pet during social isolation.

"When a puppy came into our care, we would have multiple applications, sometimes up to 100 within 24 hours," said BC SPCA general manager Lorie Chortyk. "People were very keen to adopt, and this interest in adoption has remained strong until now."

Chortyk says summer applications have nearly come to a full stop for all types of animals at the SPCA.

"We currently have more than 1,500 animals in our care. About 700 in our shelters and the rest in volunteer foster homes, but this year we have so many other animals awaiting their forever homes as well," she said.

The goal of the BC SPCA is always to find a good home for animals as quickly as possible as they've already adopted out more than 5,000 animals this year.

The BC SPCA currently has twice the amount of rabbits than they did this time last year, as well as guinea pigs, hamsters and other small animals.
