A koi-killing otter is back at Dr. Sun Yat-Sen gardens

Return of the koi-killer otter

It's happening again, almost one year later.

A koi-killing otter that made headlines last November after decimating most of the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden's population of the fish may be back, or another equally bloodthirsty compatriot.

The garden has closed its gates after spotting an otter in the pond this week along with three dead koi, CTV News reports.

Staff have set a live trap and are removing six large koi and 74 smaller koi which were introduced after the otter avoided capture last year. The fish are being housed offsite for safekeeping,

Koi have special significance in Chinese culture, embodying "good luck, abundance and perseverance," according to the park board.

The hungry otter polarized public opinion last year, with some on social media enjoying his antics and others hoping for its capture to cease the koi slaughter.
