BC Green Party leader won't seek re-election

Greens' Weaver steps down

Andrew Weaver is stepping down as leader of the Green Party and will not run for re-election in 2021.

Weaver, who reduced his workload after a health incident landed him in hospital a few weeks ago, made the announcement Monday morning, on the first day of the fall session of the legislature.

He said he will continue in his role as leader until a successor has been chosen by the party’s membership.

The Green caucus of three members props up the B.C. NDP government, which has 41 seats. The Opposition B.C. Liberals have 42 seats. Speaker Darryl Plecas sits as an Independent.

On Sept. 16, Weaver announced he was reducing his work schedule while he recovers after being diagnosed with labyrinthitis.

Weaver said he suddenly had symptoms typical of the condition on Sept. 10 before he was scheduled to address the Canadian Propane Association B.C. Seminar in Langley.

Labyrinthitis is an inflammation of the labyrinth, a part of the inner ear that helps to control balance.

The provincial government’s HealthLink website says the main symptom of labyrinthitis is vertigo that begins without warning and can cause vomiting. It can also cause hearing loss and a ringing sound in the ears.

Weaver was taken to hospital for treatment. He had expected to make a full recovery within a few weeks, but in the meantime reduced his workload and limited his appearances at public events.

"I am relieved that I am on the way to a full recovery, and that I am not facing a more serious illness," he said at the time. "It is important to remember that we must all take time to care for ourselves."
