Dog's bed lures her home

A Vancouver family has been reunited with its dog after it went missing while in the care of an online sitter.

CTV News reports Sami, a two-year-old shepard mix, went missing last week while being watched by a pet sitter hired through Rover — an online company that connects pet owners with sitters.

Michael Brennan says while on Vancouver Island Friday night for a wedding, the family got a message from their sitter saying their pet is missing.

"He then said, 'I'm sorry, your dog is gone. I will no longer be responding to any more communication with you,' and that was it," Brennan said.

After days of searching for their pet, Sami was found Wednesday morning.

On Tuesday, Brennan says they staked out a spot in East Vancouver where Sami had recently been seen, hoping to use her dog bed to attract her.

The family gave up after 11 hours, but left the bed, with a neighbour promising to keep an eye on it and call them if the dog showed up — which happened at dawn Wednesday.

"She just kind of rolled on her back and I gave her a big belly rub,” said Brennan. “I started to cry because I was just so overwhelmed that we had finally found her."

Seattle-based Rover says the sitter that lost Sami has been removed from their service, but Brennan says they'll just have a family member or friend watch their dog next time they go away.
