Two DUIs in one day

A driver in North Vancouver was arrested for impaired driving Thursday, twice in just three hours.

At 12:25 p.m., a cyclist reported seeing an erratic driver crash into a parked car near Capilano Road and Montroyal Boulevard.

Police arrived at the scene to find the driver, a man in his 30s, uninjured, but he failed a breath test.

“Officers seized his driver’s license and prohibited him from driving for 90 days,” Sgt. Peter DeVries of the North Vancouver RCMP said in a release. “The vehicle, which belongs to his father, was also seized and will be impounded for 30 days.”

The man was dropped off at his house by police, but rather than reflect on his decisions, or maybe take a nap, the man decided to get back behind the wheel.

At about 3:30 p.m. on the very same day, the same officer who dealt with the previous incident arrived at the scene of another collision with a parked car at 29th Street and Lonsdale Avenue. This time, the same driver from before had crashed his mother's car.

“It appeared he had continued drinking after his last accident, and, after another assessment of his alcohol consumption, officers arrested him for impaired driving,” Sgt. DeVries said.

While Sgt. DeVries acknowledged there's humour in the stupidity shown by the driver, he says the consequences could have been deadly.

“It’s unbelievable,” he said. “And sure, there is something comical about it but that humour has to pass quickly. He could have killed someone. Many other drunk drivers have. We need to keep these people off the road, and that's what we try to do every day.”
