Projects spark jump in crime

Crime has skyrocketed around two new supportive housing projects in Nanaimo.

A fire at a housing complex on Terminal Avenue Monday is the latest incident to put a spotlight on problems around the facilities for the homeless, CTV News reports.

Terry Usher says he's becoming increasingly concerned about safety since residents of a tent city were housed at the Terminal Avenue site.

"It's just a real undesirable place to be right now," he told CTV. "One individual threatened to cut all our throats with razorblades, was going to put hits on all of us. The same individual chased a fellow a week later up the road with a knife."

RCMP statistics confirm crime is on the rise around the two temporary housing projects at Terminal Avenue and Labieux Road, but police plan to crack down.

"We're going to hit the people who are stealing from cars, hit the people who are stealing cars," he said. "A lot of criminals do certain types of crimes. Drug trafficking is a huge issue," said Const. Gary O'Brien.
