RCMP HQ evacuated

UPDATE: 3:20 p.m.

Two suspicious packages found on a lawn adjacent to the RCMP detachment in Nanaimo, British Columbia, have caused the partial closure of the police station.

RCMP say the two cardboard packages were found at about 10:30 a.m.

The Mounties say out of an abundance of caution they have evacuated a section of the detachment and closed the building to the public.

An RCMP explosives dog carried out a preliminary assessment of the packages and a disposal unit was being consulted.

Police say the 911 and non-emergency phone lines have not been affected.
