Are boomers power hogs?

A new study indicates a wide gap between perception and reality when it comes to who uses the most power.

The report by BC Hydro finds baby boomers think they are the more energy-conscious generation, despite using more than double the electricity of millennials. Hydro says the gap is close to $500 a year more.

Boomers are those born between 1946 and 1964, and they are notorious for a less than favourable outlook on millennials in general.

They may feel millennials are always plugged in, but boomers tend to use more electricity because they typically have larger homes, more appliances and luxury amenities, as well as more energy-consuming habits.

Millennials, on the other hand, tend to live in smaller homes and eat out more often.

Boomers are also:

  • Twice as likely to have a pool and three times more likely to have a hot tub.
  • 53 per cent more likely to have a wine or beer fridge and 60 per cent more likely to have heated floors.
  • 25 per cent more likely to have a home entertainment system.

Boomers are also more likely to cook at home and use the oven as well as use power-hungry electronics like big TVs and home theatre systems, which use significantly more electricity than the tablets and laptops millennials often use to stream shows and movies.
