Fights for her grade - literally

When a thief steals your backpack containing a paper worth half your grade, what's a student to do?

For one Nanaimo woman, the answer was easy – chase them down.

Ashley Stevenson called police Tuesday, saying her home had been broken into while she was home. She told CTV News what happened next.

When Stevenson realized the thief had made off with her backpack containing her laptop and a paper she had worked six weeks on for her teaching strategies class, she took matters into her own hands.

Stevenson and her partner chased down the suspect and cornered the woman on a nearby street, holding her to the ground.

“It was a really bad idea, but in the moment I had to go for it," Stevenson told CTV. “I hopped a couple fences and took her down.”

Stevenson was hit in the head with a rock in the melee.

When police arrived, they arrested a 28-year-old woman for break and enter and theft.

“Good on these two for doing what they did. We would however be remiss to not point out they could have been seriously harmed during the struggle,” Const. Gary O'Brien told CTV. “We are glad though she got her final paper back in one piece.”
