Former Mountie sentenced

Dario Devic, a former RCMP officer who pleaded guilty to breach of trust charges in relation to a Creep Catchers sting in 2016 was sentenced Friday.

The former Mountie has been handed a four-month conditional sentence which is to be served in the community and 12 month's probation.

Devic was arrested two years ago in a sting which was caught on video by Creep Catchers where he was purportedly attempting to meet a teenager for sex.

"The sentence handed down by the judge today was not quite what the Crown was advocating for, but we respect the court's ruling, and we respect the process which led to this result," McLaughlin said.

Devic will be under house arrest for the first two months of his sentence followed by probation and 120 hours of community service.

Devic was also discharged from the force after an internal Code of Conduct investigation.

"The position of Mr. Devic has always been that he is prepared to accept responsibility for acting inappropriately, especially while he was a police officer," Devic's defence lawyer Rishi Gill said earlier this year.

Devic alleges he found the person he went to contact through the "Women Seeking Women" section of Craigslist, where the poster had listed their age as 18.

Through the court process, it was established that the person he was contacting was a 15-year-old female high school student, in point of fact the person he was actually communicating with was a 30-year-old member of Creep catchers.
