Monitoring fire overnight

UPDATE: 9:25 p.m.

The fire burning near Trail Tuesday grew to two hectares in size and came within several hundred metres of the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital.

The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary says 30 firefighters from Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Rescue were joined by BC Wildfire Service crews in aggressively fighting the fire, making good progress by this evening.

Crews will remain on site monitoring the blaze overnight, and continue the fight in the morning.

UPDATE: 8:15 p.m.

Crews are making “great progress” fighting the one-hectare wildfire sparked just north of Trail's Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital Tuesday afternoon.

Air tankers have been dropping retardant on the blaze, and the BC Wildfire Service says the blaze is not threatening any structures.

Dan Derby, regional fire chief for the Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Rescue, said on Twitter Tuesday night that co-operation between many agencies has resulted in great progress on the fire fight, and they will have crews monitoring the blaze overnight.

UPDATE: 7:55 p.m

Interior Health is advising Trail residents who need the emergency department at the hospital Tuesday night to head to Castlegar, as the one-hectare wildfire burning north of Trail's Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital has impacted access.

Interior Health expects normal access at the KBRH emergency department to resume by midnight. Until then, they've asked anyone with "less urgent needs" to proceed to Castlegar.

While the Castlegar and District Community Health Centre usually closes at 8 p.m., the Emergency Department will remain open all night this evening to accommodate patients from Trail. Castlegar is about a 30-minute drive from Trail.

Trail's hospital is not evacuating at this time, and the BC Wildfire Service says the fire is not threatening any structures as it moves uphill, away from the hospital.

UPDATE: 6 p.m

The BC Wildfire Service is responding to the fire near Trail with 25 personnel, along with two helicopters and several air tankers.

The 0.8-hectare fire is currently burning just north of the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital, but fire information officer Justine Hunse says they believe the fire is burning upslope, away from the hospital and other buildings.

While some reports on social media indicated the hospital was being evacuated due to the blaze, a hospital employee says this is not the case, and that "all is well" at this time.

Hunse says they believe the fire was caused by lightning.

ORIGINAL: 5:20 p.m.

A wildfire is burning close to Trail Tuesday afternoon.

It's unclear how big the fire is at this time, but the BC Wildfire Service says they are aware of the blaze, and they're working to determine its size.

A photo taken by resident Tammi Escott shows a large amount of smoke in the hills behind the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital and the JL Crowe Secondary School.

Escott says she's heard thunder in the area this afternoon, and believes the fire may have been sparked by lightning within the past hour.

"I would say it's probably a couple hundred yards up from the hospital," Escott said. "I'm just nervous, it's kind of freaky actually. I looked out the window and there it was."

She says while they've had some rain in the area over the past couple of nights, the forest is still very dry.

Castanet will update this story as more information becomes available.
