Drones halt fire fight

BC Wildfire Service water bombers were forced to temporarily halt operations on the Wilson Creek wildfire on Sunday, due to people operating drones above the fire.

A helicopter that was supporting ground crews was also grounded.

And additional firefighting aircraft working on other fires in the area had to be diverted from the airspace around Little Wilson Lake, about 19 kilometres east of Nakusp.

RCMP are investigating the incident.

The use of drones near a wildfire is illegal. The restricted airspace includes a radius of five nautical miles around any wildfire, to an altitude of 3,000 feet.

Anyone caught operating a drone within an active wildfire zone could be fined $25,000, or jailed for up to 18 months under federal regulations. Provincial rules allow for $1,150 tickets and fines of up to $100,000 and/or face imprisonment for a year.
