A woman is suing the University of British Columbia for negligence after having her throat slashed in the front doorway of her dorm room in 2016.
Mary Hare opened the door of her room in October 2016 to international student Thamer Hameed Almestadi, who was suffering from a psychotic episode.
During Almestadi's trial, the courts heard he knocked on her door and slit her neck with a knife and started choking her until two other students pulled him off her, reports CTV Vancouver.
Hare’s civil lawsuit filed last week claims UBC was negligent for failing to provide better security features on the doors of the dorm where both students lived.
"UBC knew or should have been aware of the risk of forced entry into rooms and assaults," it reads, adding the university should have realized the need for a mechanism that would let students open their doors while keeping it locked.
The attack left Hare with three scars on her neck and post-traumatic stress disorder.
At trial, Almestadi was found not criminally responsible and sent to a forensic psychiatric hospital for treatment. He told the courts he believed God had ordered him to make a human sacrifice.
