Coyote gnawed on his head

The mother of a three-year-old boy attacked by a coyote in Burnaby on Tuesday says she thought her son was dying during the ordeal.

Amanda Dycke says her son, Ayden, needed more than 100 stitches to his head.

Ayden slipped out of the family's yard about 5:15 p.m., and moments later Dycke heard him scream.

"I ran out through the front…I didn't see until I got to the sidewalk that there was a coyote gnawing on his head," she told CTV.

"I started making as much noise as I could, clapping, and I seen it wasn't working, and I started charging at full speed not caring if it was leaving or not."

The coyote retreated, and Dycke quickly scooped up her boy.

"He looked like he was dying," she said. "His eyes were covered in blood, his ears, his whole shirt."

Neighbours gathered to help as she called 911.

Ayden suffered several deep wounds to his head and several puncture wounds and scratches on his arms and legs.

He's expected to make a full recovery after being treated at BC Children's Hospital.

Conservation officers shot a coyote they believe is responsible, later that evening.
