Real estate practices probed

The B.C. government is taking a look at how real estate regulators in the province are operating.

A review will be done on the Real Estate Council of B.C. and the Office of the Superintendent of Real Estate. Recommendations from that review will be brought to Finance Minister Carole James by June 15.

"Topics under review include the appropriate structure and composition of the regulators, how they should communicate, mechanisms for resolving disputes, and how to divide responsibility for matters such as licensee qualifications and rule making," the province said in a news release.

James said the review will make sure real estate regulators are acting in the best interest of residents.

"Buying and selling property can be stressful, and people need to trust the professionals they are working with," James said.

The review will be led by Dan Perrin of Perrin, Thorau and Associates, who is based in Brentwood Bay. The province said Perrin is "a highly experienced former public servant and has completed several other reviews for government."
