Invites sent by mistake

Thousands of students rejected by UBC Vancouver were accidentally sent orientation week invites.

The invite was sent to 31,000 applicants, but only about 7,000 are admitted to first-year programs each year.

One person who received the invitation but wasn't actually accepted told CTV she was “heartbroken” and had already told her parents she'd been accepted.

“This email was sent in error to all UBC applicants rather than students who have accepted an offer of admission from UBC,” said Andrew Arida, associate registrar and director of UBC. “We apologize for the confusion it caused for prospective students.”

The school recommends applicants check their Student Service Centre account online for accurate updates on their admissions.
