Set fire to home, killed wife

A man who intentionally set fire to his home in Port Moody, killing his wife, has been sentenced to 18 years in jail.

The 47-year-old father of multiple children can't be named due to a publication ban.

Justice Frits Verhoeven delivered the sentence in New Westminster Supreme Court on Wednesday.

"The crimes are shocking and the consequences devastating," Verhoeven told CTV. "It is difficult to imagine that the children will fully recover. Their lives are shattered."

The father pleaded guilty to charges of manslaughter and arson causing bodily harm last week.

With credit for time served, the man will spend another 15 years and six months in prison.

Verhoeven also handed him a 10-year ban on owning firearms, and ordered the father not to contact his children until they're 19 years old.
