More trees, please

West Vancouver is considering a bylaw mandating a minimum number of trees on any property.

A staff report considered by council suggests owners be required to have at least one tree for each 150 square metres of land.

Permits would be required to cut down old growth and protected species.

In cases where the minimum cannot be met, owners would pay a fee that would cover the cost of planting a matching number of trees on city property.

All trees containing an eagle or osprey nest would also be protected.

The report follows a survey of about 400 people last year in which 65.7 per cent felt tree removal should be regulated.

The pace of development has increased concern over tree protection, the report says. It recommends a study of tree canopy levels and regulations to maintain it.

Meetings with residents and stakeholders are expected before a final report to council.
