More turmoil at city hall

Weeks after Nanaimo's city manager Tracy Samra was arrested for death threats to the city's mayor and one councillor, the acting city manager is on leave for reasons not disclosed.

Mayor Bill McKay confirmed Victor Mema is on leave; Mema is the city's chief financial officer and has been the acting CAO since Samra's arrest.

In a statement released on Friday, McKay said he and council have learned of "an allegation of significant concern," and have asked that an independent investigation be done.

McKay didn't confirm if the allegation was tied to Mema's absence.

"We take these concerns very seriously and share Nanaimo residents’ commitment to prudent and thoughtful governance and processes," the city said in a news release.

"Council is therefore committed to addressing and resolving these matters in the public interest."
