Highway scheduled to close

Early morning travellers may need to make alternate plans, as Highway 3, west of Creston, will be closed Friday for avalanche control.

The Kootenay Pass highway is scheduled to be closed from 3 to 7 a.m. as crews work to clear any potential avalanche danger.

The area has been subject to a snowfall warning all day Thursday, and upwards of 40 centimetres of snow is expected to fall in the area through Friday night.

Environment Canada urges drivers to postpone “non-essential travel” along Highway 3 between Paulson Summit and Kootenay Pass.

Highway 3A, using the Kootenay Lake Ferry, provides an alternate route around the closure.
