State memorial for Barrett

Former B.C. premier Dave Barrett will be honoured with a state memorial service next Saturday.

The premier's office has announced the open service will be held at the University of Victoria starting at 10 a.m.

Barrett led B.C.'s first New Democratic Party government from September 1972 until December 1975.

He died three weeks ago in Victoria at the age of 87, following a long struggle with Alzheimer's Disease.

The service is open to the public and media.

An online book of condolences has been set up.

In addition to the online book, a book of condolences is available in Victoria at the Parliament Buildings, located in the Hall of Honour until 2 p.m. on Friday, March 2. All messages will be presented to Barrett's family.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be directed to the Alzheimer's Society of B.C., the Oak Bay Kiwanis Pavilion or a charity of choice.
