Free love in the Square

Dozens of couples tied the knot in Vancouver's Robson Square during a pop-up wedding event on Sunday.

The free event saw 144 couples say "I do" at one of seven altars. Pro photographers also provided their services for free.

"We want to give back to the community and let people know they can get married without spending thousands and thousands of dollars," said organizer Nicole Vanselo. "It’s just a fun way to celebrate love."

Couples needed to have a marriage licence, but other than that, all it cost was a $20 donation to the Vancouver Food Bank.

"It's a true shotgun experience," Vanselo told CTV. "We get people that have kids, people that have gotten married in Mexico and it's not necessarily legal … and people that just got engaged last week."

James and Samantha Gunn were among those to get hitched.

"I wanted to get married the day he proposed, so this is the quickest way to go about it," said Samantha.

Chris and Diane Keough didn't tell anyone about their spur of the moment decision.

"Today, we're eloping," Diane said. "He's the first person I've ever been with that gets me. I love him to pieces."
