Rogers Pass clear for now

UPDATE: 6:55  a.m.

Highway 1 through Rogers Pass was opened at 2 a.m. Saturday morning after crews spent hours Friday clearing massive amounts of avalanche debris from the highway. 

The highway will be closed again from 1 - 4 p.m. on Saturday for additional avalanche control. 


UPDATE: 11:15 p.m.

While DriveBC previously estimated Highway 1 between Revelstoke and Golden would open by 10 p.m., that estimate has now changed to early Saturday morning. 

DriveBC says crews are working to remove "significant avalanche debris" from the highway, 50 kilometres east of Revelstoke, and expects the road to reopen sometime between 2 and 6 a.m.

Images in the area show a pile of snow covering the highway several metres high, after a controlled avalanche covered the road earlier in the day. 


UPDATE: 5:20 p.m.

DriveBC now says Highway 1 has reopened between Revelstoke and Sicamous. 


UPDATE: 4:50 p.m.

The Trans-Canada Highway has now also been closed between Sicamous and Revelstoke for avalanche debris cleanup. Estimated time of opening is 10 p.m., says DriveBC.


UPDATE: 4:20 p.m.

The Highway 1 closure east of Revelstoke has been extended to 10 p.m. for avalanche control debris cleanup.


UPDATE: 2:50 p.m.

The Trans-Canada Highway will be closed this afternoon east of Revelstoke, for avalanche control.

DriveBC reports the highway will close from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.


UPDATE: 11:20 a.m.

Highway 1 has now reopened from Golden to the B.C.-Alberta border, DriveBC reports.

Expect traffic congestion and minor delays. 


UPDATE: 10:20 a.m.

A travel advisory has been issued for the Coquihalla Highway between Merritt and Kamloops.

DriveBC reports extended sections of black ice and slippery conditions.

Travellers are advised to exercise caution and be aware of road maintenance equipment and crews. 


ORIGINAL: 5:15 a.m.

The Trans-Canada Highway is closed again at the B.C.-Alberta border this morning.

Winter driving conditions are in effect over much of the route, and the closure affects a 70-kilometre stretch east of Field due to high avalanche hazard.

Estimated time of opening is noon Friday.
