Vehicle stuck in avalanche

UPDATE: 9:45 p.m.

A traveller stuck on Highway 1 said he witnessed an avalanche come across the highway causing a vehicle to get stuck.

Drive BC closed Highway 1 between Revelstoke to Golden and also eastbound traffic from Sicamous to Revelstoke due to high avalanche hazard after the incidents.

Police are on scene after two separate vehicle incidents occurred on Wednesday night between 8:15 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Iain Cranston posted on Twitter that an avalanche came across the road and a vehicle got stuck near Hemlock Grove.

“Chained trucks not making it up the hill,” said Cranston. “Road very icy under snow.”

Cranston’s location is just outside Hemlock Grove Boardwalk, between Revelstoke and Golden.

“More avalanches can be heard... scary,” he posted.

The estimated time of re-opening is not until Thursday at noon.


UPDATE: 9:30 p.m.

Two sections of Highway 1 are closed after two separate vehicle incidents on Wednesday night.

Highway 1 is closed in both directions from Golden to Revelstoke and Highway 1 section 40 km east of Revelstoke to 70 km east of Revelstoke is also closed.

Drive BC said the incidents are not related but very close.

The two incidents happened within 45 minutes of each other.

Updates are expected from Drive BC at 9:30 p.m.


UPDATE: 8:25 p.m.

Highway 1 is now closed for a 30 kilometre stretch near Revelstoke after a vehicle incident on Wednesday.

The closure is expected to last until 10 p.m. 

Drive BC said "closed in both directions 40 km east of Revelstoke to 70 km east of Revelstoke," at 8:18 p.m.

The details of the incident are not clear at this time.

No detours are available at this time and the next update is expected at 9:30 p.m.


ORIGINAL: 8:15 p.m.

A vehicle incident on Highway 1 near Revelstoke is causing delays in both directions.

Drive BC said heavy delays are to be expected due to congestion.

The incident appears to have taken place at about 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday just north of Canyon Hot Springs and 40 km east of Revelstoke.

Cameras from Drive BC show numerous tractor-trailers sitting bumper to bumper and heavy snow falling on the highway.
