Probe into death threats

A special prosecutor has been appointed to the case of Nanaimo's city manager, who was arrested for allegedly threatening the city's mayor and a council member.

The BC Prosecution Service has appointed Michael Klein, a senior Vancouver lawyer in a private practice, to the Tracy Samra case.

“The appointment of a special prosecutor is intended to avoid any potential for real or perceived improper influence in the administration of justice in light of the nature of the allegations and the identity of some of the complainants as elected municipal officials,” said communications counsel Dan McLaughlin.

Samra was arrested at Nanaimo's City Hall last week. No charges were laid, and the city manager was released on a promise to appear in court, as police continue to investigate.

“(Klein) was given a mandate to provide legal advice to the RCMP investigators as may be necessary, conduct any related charge assessment and assume conduct of the prosecution if charges were approved,” McLaughlin said.
